Mr. and Mrs. Iyer have many memorable scenes. Its one of my favorite movie. To come to think of it, it’s a fairy tale, a fantasy movie. It moves at a slow pace and tries to touch the topic of Hindu-Muslim relation and yet its just about people.
There are a number of scenes which I like which I plan to write about at some point of time. The most memorable is when Raja (Rahul Bose) and Meenakshi Iyer (Konkana Sen-Sharma) are pretending to be husband and wife in front of a group of teenagers.
When the teenagers start asking them questions about how they met and everything, they start to build a story on the conversation they had earlier. So when a girl wants to know how they met, Rahul turns to Konkana and ask
Rahul: How did we meet Meenakshi?
Konkana: In a bus, remember?
Rahul: Right, in a bus we were on our way to Assam, A place called Kaziranga. Have you heard of it?
Without quite expecting an answer, he continues
Rahul: Well! She had gone for an exercesion and I had gone on an assignment
At this time Meenakshi joins in as if she is really married to Rahul and is explaining her husband profession.
Konakana: He is a photographer, specializes in Wild Life and all that.
A girl in the group: Was it love at first sight?
Rahul: Hardly, she almost broke my head with a telephoto lens.
From this moment, Rahul starts building the story. The way he tells the story, it seems that they are actually husband and wife. When one of the girl asks them, where did they go for their honeymoon, Rahul turns to Konkana and teases her;
Rahul: Where did we go for our honeymoon, Meenakshi?
She is a mix of embarrassment and speechless She manages
Konkana: Hummm You tell!
And Rahul continues: To another forest actually, near Madhurai, Kerala.
At this moment he is lost in his own story. The reaction around him become irrelevant, as he continues
Rahul: It was around a lake called Periyar. It waas the middle of monsoon and we had a cottage by the lake on the edge of the forest and every evening we see these elephants. Watched the mother teach the young how to swim. I got some great shots from my window.
The girls are not interested in the photography story. They chide him for doing work on his honeymoon. He continues
Rahul: Have you seen Chindambaram, the temple?
Rahul: Meenakshi and I lit lamps around the temple at twilight. It’s the most beautiful sight…… in the world. We also lived in a tree house……. by the way….. for a whole week. Also in kerala…. on the top of the hill in the middle of a …..tropical rain forest.
At this moment, the background noise is replaced by a male voice humming a tune. Rahul is totally lost in his own memories and so is Konkana. She is like living the whole thing.
Rahul: In the evening we sit in the little balcony and sip red wine there was no electricity. So we eat by the light of little oil lamps and then of course there was the full moon.
He stops, looks at Konkana and innocently asks her
We didn’t need lamps then, did we meenakshi?
The punch line! The expression on Konkana face is of shyness and confusion. I really don’t know what, but she does not speak and the scene ends with that expression. Amazing!
Punds, you’ve proven urself to be a die hard romantic 🙂
Haven’t seen the movie but have heard a lot about it. Maybe I should.

Punds
It was naya post..sorry for the slip in typing..:))
Wow, Punds! I had not seen this post, only the review for Mr and Mrs Iyer. After all, that is the way I found your blog! 😉
You do work hard on your posts, don’t you? I agree, that scene is wonderful and Konkana and Rahul are both perfect in their roles. Konkana’s faces made me smile a lot in this scene. She makes some funny and lovely ones. Rahul’s faces are also marvellous, I think Meenakshi realised how much he loves life and she is impressed by that and I guess that is the reason why her feelings change little by little. You can tell from her expressions that she has never shared such beautiful honeymoon feelings and experiences with her husband… and I suppose she starts admiring him!
So I imagine getting a couple of dialogues more from the film for me will not be as much inconvenience as I had firstly thought! I can see you enjoy doing it. Good!
Ah! I think I will have to watch this film again very soon…
Yes Monica
A little dejection on what she missed, a little awe for Rahul and a dream she wished could happen.
I think that sums up the expression on her face.
No matter how many times you see it, its always feels as you are seeing it for the first time.
Punds
That’s my favorite scene too, specially when Rahul starts narrating, incorporating his real life experience into the dreamy honeymoon tale. Konkana’s expression were too good. Thanks for writing down the dialogues 🙂
And yes you are right…No matter how many times you see it, its always feels like first time.
BTW loved your other movie reviews too.
