In a nation where housewife are obsessed with Ekta Kapoor’s Saas-Bahu serial, making a horror movie about the serials is quite innovative. 13 B is the story of a soap opera taking over the life of a family and how the paranormal activities in the house lead to some spooky stories.
13 B is about Madhavan who plays Manohar, a civil engineer who lives with his mother, wife, sister, brother, his wife and their two children. All of them move to a new flat after the two brothers take a huge loan. Just as they start living in the new home, strange things happen to Madhavan. He cannot make the life work alone. His photo appears twisted on his mobile phone, he cannot put a nail on the wall.
The women of the house are obsessed with tele-soaps that they leave everything to watch them.
Many of his house incidents strangely starts reflecting a serial on a TV channel titled “Sab Khairyat hai” (Everything is fine) coming at 13:00 Hours. Madhavan discovers that although the start had some good incidents as the serial progress, bad things start to happen. He tries desperately to find some answers to the problem taking the help of his Police inspector friend ultimately solving the puzzle.
13B is a horror cum thriller. Its more of a thriller. There is more suspense than horror in the movie. Although it does have its scary moments, it can be termed as a better murder mystery The story and the plot are gripping and thankfully does not have the godmen’s mantra tantra to solve the ghost problem. I cannot sit through “Phoonk” because of the same old story of godman coming to solve the problem.
13B takes a logical approach where the hero tries to solve the problem through facts and analysis. The pace is just perfect and the horror factor kicks in from the first minute. There is one song picturised on the lead couple and that was certainly frustrating. Especially when we were on the edge of the seat, the song just pops up for no reason totally ruining the mood. The producers have to understand that the story focuses on the suspense and not on the chemistry between the lead pair so a song showing their romance was totally unnecessary.
The cinematography by P C Shreeram is the plus point of the movie. As the camera takes you through the building and house and also on the construction site, it creates a perfect eerie atmosphere.
As the story takes the center-stage, actors play second fiddle to the movie. Murli Sharma is ok as a inspector, Neetu Chandra does not have much to do except being Madhavan’s wife, Poonam Dhillon is Madhavan’s fussy mother and Sachin Khedekar has a small role as the family doctor. There are other characters played by many actors and offer good support including the actors on the TV serial.
The script and direction by Vikram Kumar is laced with humor, suspense and horror. He has a good grip on the story but could have shortened the investigative part a bit. All the incidents in the first half are explained in the second half.
Its a fun-ride if you are interested in getting scared and again it is different than just getting scared. I really enjoyed it and its definitely worth a watch
