The love for music is universal. Almost everybody likes some form of music. Over the years, I have loved a lot of songs. Somewhere down the road, many of these songs have become hits. I don’t have a favorite song as such but I have a whole list. Being a hit means that a song is loved by many people. Also it means that it is heard more number of times than normal. I have found myself falling out of love to these overplayed songs so much so that I wished they had never become such a hit.
And there are some songs which never become hit for some reason of the other. The lyrics are good, the song is good, the singer has sung it well but then it does not work with the people. Over a period of time, it gets lost in time somewhere and when you hear it once in a blue moon, its bliss. These songs could have been hits and for some reasons, they never were.
This is about those songs;
The missed hits, The unsung hits
August 1997 – I had just completed my Diploma and the next option was job or a degree. The admission for degree was centralized and for us it was in Aurangabad. I was only looking for colleges in Mumbai and Pune and by the afternoon of the first day we were pretty sure that we would not be getting admission in any of the colleges in these cities.
We were standing in a big tent constructed for the students and their parents who had come for admission. As news started coming out, people were becoming nervous and tensed. Those who got admission had already left the premises. We were waiting our turn but were sure that it would have been a college far away from Mumbai.
Pramod, Rahul, Chetan and I discussed among us if we really need to go in and return disappointed. We decided that we didn’t want to sad face to Mumbai. As it was clear that the admission was not coming through, it was no use wasting our time there. We look at the watch and decided that we would watch a movie. Everyone went in different direction to ask our other classmates. Suddenly the tent was echoing with our shout that we need to get to the 3:00 PM show and it was already 2:15 PM.
We came out, got into a waiting rickshaw and asked him to take us to a theatre. The Rickshaw took us to a theatre playing Shahrukh Khan- Juhi Chawla Starrer “Yes Boss”. Multiplex had not made an entry then and the balcony ticket was only rupees 22.
The movie started and the title started rolling in. A white screen with Kumar Sanu’s voice and I was hooked. I guess the only reason the song did not pick up was because it was during the title track and TV channels did not show new songs 24 hours a day. “Yes Boss” and its songs went on to become a huge hit and for some reason, this song was the least played song of the movie.
The song is picturized on Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. It is a sweet romantic number shot on a set with white and black background. I like the song, the lyrics and especially the way it is shot. The song sets the mood for the rest of the movie. Even after so many years, this still remains an evergreen romantic single.
