How do you describe a movie which is divided into 10 parts? How do you rate a movie which is 10 different stories directed by 6 directors and written by 12 writers. Its a good concept but its lacking in the implementation. Getting 10 stories with a twist in the end and making each stories interesting is quite an effort. Short stories are always pleasure to read and watch especially the one which offer a good twist.
Its a new experiment in India and so just wanted to see if it works. So instead of movie as a whole, lets dissect each story
Ek: Matrimony
Dir: Sanjay Gupta
A little too obvious. An urban couple with the wife having an affair. A gift by the lover leads to her covering her tracks and the twist in the end. Ok Story, Ok acting and Ok direction. Mandira Bedi and Arbaaz khan do what they were intended to do.
Rating: 5/10
Do: High On the Highway
Director: Hansal Mehta
This one is the second worst story. College buddies played by JImmy Shergill and Masumeh watch trucks at nights on the highway getting drunk on booze and drugs. They talk about life and philosophy and nothing in particular. The two characters talk and seem to understand each other but we don’t have any idea about what they are talking. We were glad that it lasted only 10 minutes. Not a nice story to choose. I hope it was a nice story to read.
Rating: 4:10
Teen:Pooranmashi
Director: Meghna Gulzar
A tale about a daughter and her mother and her mother’s lover. The story kept the suspense a little better with pointing to various direction. The story and the direction suggest it be of the horror kind but its drama, social drama. Minisha Lamba and Amrita Singh do well. Parmeet Sethi is just there to stand and stare.
Rating: 6/10
Char: Strangers in the Night
Director: Sanjay Gupta
Now this was a story with a good end and a twist but the story as a whole falls flat. Everything is explained in the end but it takes time to built up. Mahesh Manjarekar and Neha Dupia do not have much scope to do anything.
Rating: 5/10
Panch: Zahir
Director: Sanjay Gupta
Manoj Bajpai and Dia Mirza star in this one. A nice straightforward story with a nice twist too. One of the better stories but not the best. I did not get the title though. Is it Zeher or Poison or Zahir which is a name? A decent effort on this one. When you want to shoot on the 18th floor of a building, please go ahead and shoot. Bombay looks great from there but for god’s sake, Versova does not have a railway yard anywhere near it
Rating: 6/10
Che: Sex on the Beach
Director: Apporva Lakhia
Now this was supposed to be a sexy and horror story and its none. Dino Morea finds a strange book and then meets a sexy young girl in a golden bikini on a deserted beach. One things lead to another and they are in for a nice romantic evening. Its neither scary nor sexy. Its fails miserably with the horror part. bad story, bad acting and bad direction
Rating: 4/10
Saath: Love Dale
Director: Jasmeet Dhodi
A girl on a train to meet her future husband meets a lady who gives her a earring. She gets down on a station called Lovedale to return the earring. This is supposed to be romantic story but too many coincidences and it all looks hurried. Too many characters and no soul, this one was the worst executed story of the lot. Aftab does not have anything to do except look grim and smile sometime. Anupam Kher in the smallest role possible. “Lovedale” is the worst of the lot. A real bad script and story and it seems that they wanted a love story in the 10 stories and just thought making one out of nothing, not even logic.
Rating: 3/10
Aaath: Rice Plate
Director: Rohit Roy
Shabana Azmi and Naseerudin Shah working together after many years in this Rohit Roy directed feature based on Hindu Muslim people and surprisingly one of the better story but not a touching one. The story does try to make a valid point but the character of Naseerudin Shah remains underdeveloped and without any objective. It has to touch your heart but does not although it does bring a smile on the face.
Rating: 6/10
Nau: Gubbare
Director: Sanjay Gupta
Nana Patekar essays the role somewhat like in “Yugpurush”. Rohit Roy and Anita play husband wife who fight over small matters. She goes and sits near Nana Patekar who holds red balloons in his hands. A very predictable story with no surprising twist. Nana Patekar’s dialog like “Zindagi itni badi bhi nahi” gives the story away. The story was supposed to be the warm story of the lot and it is to a certain extent only that we have seen a lot of stories like that. In fact I remember the Zee TV Serial “Gubbare” which had similar story. Nana is at his usual best and can just sleepwalk through such roles.
Rating: 5/10
Dus: Rise and Fall
Director: Hansal Mehta and Sanjay Gupta
The action flick of the lot. Tells the story of two underworld friends played by Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty. It describes the rise and fall of two gangster and shot in Matrix style. The story is about style rather than content. Big black car, business suit for Sanjay Dutt, Stylish gun, fighting in the rain with light reflecting on tiny raindrops everything is style. With two stories running parallel, the end is not difficult to guess. Long back Sanjay Gupta ripped of “Once a thief” to make “Aatish”. The story looks another rip off but I don’t know from where.
Rating: 4/10
“Dus Kahaniyan” is a good concept but the choice of story really lacks interest. I think the producers were quite excited about the concept than the content. Telling a story in 10 minutes is obviously no easy task but maybe a little bit efforts in writing could have done the trick. How the stories were selected is still not clear but these stories are good for television but if I am spending money to watch it on the big screen, I need a better product. Most of the stories lack the soul of a good story and that is the biggest problem in the movie.
If they repeat the experiment, they better select good stories next time.
Average of rating makes it easy to rate the movie as a whole
Rating: 4.8/10
I loved the kaleidoscopic starting credits… and more so i was expecting all the stories to interlink in the end.

Punds.
I liked the movie. The concept, the presentation, acting and the pace scrore over some of the mediocre stories. I would have given it 8/10 ranking. It was still better than the likes of OSO and Sawariya.
