A few days back, I had been to my old office. This was the office I was working before I went to Amsterdam. I met my namesake here. The person who has the same name as me. I have a very rare name and meeting a person with the same name is quite strange in itself.
His work space was right in front of the door. I do not like a working place which is exposed to everyone. I do not like if people can see my screen. There has to be some privacy while working too even though you are doing official work and of course especially for the non-official work
This colleague and I go back a long way because when this office was made, he was one of the first person to come here. I would call him a friend. As we started talking, he was looking at his non-work mails, one which are forwarded among office colleagues. The ones which tell about friendship or all those repeated jokes or those photos about the biggest bridge or just some poem accompanied with a picture. I pointed to him that he is sitting right in front of the door and everybody could see his screen.
At the same time another colleague joined the conversation. He told me that this was the best place anyone could sit because he is the most sought after guy. In a big room full of people, he is the first point of contact and source of information. Everyone was jealous for his right-in-front-of-the-door seat.
After the colleague left, I asked my friend
Me: So why do you like the seat? I mean it exposes your screen to everybody who walks in through that door
He: Yes! But see the advantage. Everyone who comes in through the door has to meet me and then if they have doubts they ask me questions
Me: Yes! But then you have to answer everybody’s question
He: But then you are not looking at th picture. We have some quite pretty young things looking for answers and I am the one who answers them
Me: Well! To tell you the truth, its not important that these girls ask questions but its certainly important what questions they ask. And with the questions they ask, you are going nowhere except this seat!
The moral of the story, Sahi jawaab ke liye sahi sawaal!
