A successful Item number should not be crude, with the typical skin show. The item number makes the dancer desirable at the same time having that foot tapping number. Item numbers and erotic song are a different game altogether. Although many movies do have an Item number, most of them are forgotten quite easily. However some of the item numbers do make a mark. So looking at some of the Item number that made a mark again in no particular order
Ek Do teen – Tezaab(1988)
Madhuri Dixit became famous after this one song. I remember that when the movie was released, we only had Doordarshan and the song was such a rage that every home would be playing that song. Madhuri Dixit is one actress who really likes to dance. You can see the happiness on her face when she dances. Another actor who enjoys dancing is Govinda. She went on to dance in many songs after that but ek do teen was the birth of a superstar.
Kajra re – Bunty aur Babli (2005)
I am not a fan of Aishwarya Rai. I think she is an overrated actress. She may be beautiful but she is not an actress but I have to admit that I really love the song and I really cannot picture anybody else in the song. The secret maybe was the picturization of the song. The Big B and the small B and Aishwarya Rai giving all the attention to the Big B while giving cold shoulders to Small B. Aishwarya got it just right oozing sexiness and showing great dance moves. I guess the only moment I have liked Aishwarya Rai.
Mehbooba Mehbooba – Sholay (1975)
Helen was almost touching 40 when she did this movie and Jalal Aga danced on his knees for most of the song that his knees hurt. The song was a great dance number coupled with R D Burman’s voice, it was the greatest item song. Of course Helen did many Item song, the famous being “Piya tu ab toh aa ja” from Caravan.
Deedar de – Dus (2005)
“Dus” was director Anubhav Sinha’s biggest hit. A fast-paced thriller, it had many actors and none of them danced at this fabulous song. The song was catchy, high-tempo and had that Arabic dance tunes. However the best aspect of the song were the Item girls. All new and all danced wonderfully. Sunidhi Chauhan voice added that extra zing to the song. While you are looking at the song, watch the moves of the girl in the purple dress and also notice the biceps of the main girl in the pink dress. Now that girl has worked a lot in the gym.
Maiyya Maiyya – Guru (2007)
Mallika Sherawat has some quality that has made her so famous. It was that sexuality that oozes from her that made Mani Ratnam made her dance to A R Rehman’s song. The song has been sung beautifully and then Mallika has just spiced up the song just right and she is hot in the song.
Choli Ke Peeche – Khalnayak
Madhuri Dixit again. See how wasily she can dance at this song without being totally cheap and vulgar although the lyrics had hidden meaning. The song proved that why Madhuri was Madhuri.
Beedi – Omkara (2006)
Bipasa Basu playing a dancer dancing in the midst of drunk outlaws and the atmosphere is intoxicated with the beat of the music and of course the alcohol. This Vishal Bharadwaj movie would be known for many things and one of them would be this song. The song has everything, the music, the song and the rustiness of a north Indian village. Although Bipasa could have still danced better, the song is a treat to watch because of the others who danced like there was no tomorrow.
Babuji Zara Dheera Chalo – Dum (2003)
Yana Gupta does not look Indian and she certainly does not look like a nautanki wali (gypsy would not be right word). The song like Beedi number in Omkara is a rustic song in the first half. The second half Yana Gupta becomes totally modern in a revealing western outfit and she has danced quite freely in both the parts. Yana Gupta had danced to glory here but I guess the song became what it was because of the great music by Sandeep Chowta and sung by Sonu Kakkar and Sukhwinder Singh
Aisa Jadoo – Khakee (2004)
This was a typical item song with Lara Dutta only dancing for this one song in the movie. She danced between all those people. The singer, Sunidhi Chauhan again and music by Ram Sampath. Great foot taping music.
Rangeela Re – Rangeela (1995)
I saw the movie in theatres. This was the first song of the movie and the introduction of the movie. The song starts with Asha Bhosale singing a high pitch “Rangeela Re”. The song drew loud cheers and whistles in the hall. Rangeela had Aamir Khan in that unforgettable character of ‘Munna’ but it had the sexy Urmila too or did she just reinvented herself. Although the rest of the song was just good dancing by Urmila and nothing extraordinary, this movie gave Urmila career a big boost.
Dhoom Again – Dhoom 2 (2006)
Dhoom 2 would have been the biggest flop if it wouldn’t have been for Hrithik Roshan. It had awful story, a dull cast, ok music and worst lyrics and yet it had Hrithik Roshan. Hrithik single-handedly saved the movie. The first song of the movie and you are just awestruck by his moves. Although item number mostly feature female, Hrithik makes it such a pleasure to watch any person dancing with such grace.
