The encounter with the Astrologer on the streets of Amsterdam left me pretty much surprised. In India where a large number of people believe in Astrology and consult astrologers all the time, it wouldn’t be surprising to find astrologers on the road offering to tell you the future. It is ironic that people who tell you that you are going to be rich don’t know where their next meal will come from.
Astrology may not be fake. They say it’s a science. Maybe! I will not debate on it. My parents would consult our family astrologer before taking any major steps related to finance or personal but it was only big decisions and not everyday decisions. Sometimes while cleaning our cupboards, my brother and I would find our horoscope (kundali). We were not allowed to read our horoscope although we did read it a couple of times. The horoscope was made when we were born keeping the birth time and date in mind.
At that time we never understood what was written. Either the astrologer did not know anything or he did not want anybody to read it. His handwriting was so bad that it was difficult to make anything out of it. As far as I remember, there were ages which were important and when something was going to happen in my life, kind of a schedule fixed for my life. I am not sure how much of it has happened according to the schedule
These kundalis are the same one which the parents/elders use to find a spouse for you in an arranged marriage. Based on this document, it will be decided if the person you are going to marry or already married is suitable for you or not. Of course nowadays people actually meet and just not see each other. When my parents got married, they just saw each other for a few minutes and then decided to get married. I am not sure if the horoscope were matched because my father did not have one. He did not even remember his birth-date forget birth-time, required for making a horoscope. For 26 years they had a happy marriage before my father passed away 3 and half hear ago.
Most people in my family had an arranged marriage matching the horoscope first. When I look at some of them, I guess something has terribly gone wrong somewhere. If their horoscope were matched before marriage, then god help others who took advice from that astrologer.
My parents thought that I was very troublesome. I did not study properly, troubled everybody and etc etc. So they consulted an astrologer who recommended doing a shanti for me. In simpler words it was a calming down ceremony for me. I sat for 2 hours taking all the smoke in my eyes. After the ceremony, my grades had not improved and I was the same self many years later. I guess it was to calm the external forces creating problems in my life whatever they were. I did protest telling them if my horoscope said that this and this would happen who are we calming down?
My weekly call to home now has my mother asking about showing my Kundali (horoscope) to match with prospective brides. One of my friends had to sacrifice his love because his mother asked for the girl’s horoscope. He in the fit of anger not only said bye to the girl but stayed unmarried for a number of years. Stupid!
When we were in college, an astrologer visited us who said that I would never fall in love and my friend was told that he would get married early at the age of 25. Ultimately I fell in love and my friend got married at the age of 27. All the while during my friends 25th year we were desperately seeing a girl for him. But his 25th year came and went without any female in his life. Then again according to my horoscope, I should have got married at age 27. Now if I did not marry the girl I was supposed to marry at the age of 27, who the hell did SHE marry? I always wonder!
The other aspect of the whole astrology is the Sun sign. I am a Taurus because my birth is in May but according to Hindu calendar, it is kanya which is Virgo in English. My mother and I are of the same sun sign according to Hindu astrology. It may be moon sign too but I really don’t know. Once my mother read a prediction that it was the right time to buy lottery tickets for Virgo. So on a Sunday morning I traveled all the way to the railway station and bought tickets worth thirty rupees. We did win a lottery of 18 rupees. So although the prediction was true, we still ended with a loss.
Indians want to know what will be waiting for them so everyday they read their prediction in newspaper. It was so popular that we even got prediction on TV channels. I don’t know if they are still shown but I remember after doing third shift (graveyard shift, night shift) when I came home and wanted to go to sleep, my parents would be dedicatedly listening to the day’s forecast. Any noise in between would be inviting an angry glare from them. I am not sure if it really helped.
The one favorite pass time is to check compatibility between signs. When I was in love, I would check my compatibility with her. Again with my crushes, compatibility would be check. It did not matter if we were really compatible because only it mattered was the feeling but then if we were not then the points would be conveniently ignored. If we were really compatible according to sun sign, I would feel happy about it. It would have been wrong to base relations on sun sign compatibility. Is it possible that all people born in the same month will have similar behavioral characteristics? Maybe! I will not debate on that too.
Although whatever the stars and planet say, a lot of one’s life depends on the belief and action of an individual. The future is in your hand. Although it does bring a smile because you remember the same words written on the walls of the gents toilet. But even if you leave the funny part, the future is in your hands. The future depends on the decisions you take today and the decisions you think are right at that moment of time. Whatever be the future, at least try to live the present with no regrets from the past.
