The first time I saw him was when he was just 4 weeks old. Sleeping with 7 more of his sibling, he was the whitest of them all. The reason Vijay and Sheena choose him was because he was white and the next thing was he was the most silent of them all. Only after the next two weeks, he was allowed to accompany us home.
He traveled almost a hour to reach home. The first time in the car was not a great experience for him. He had just learnt to walk and trying to keep his balance in the car with his weak legs was certainly not his idea of fun. In addition he was away from his parents and siblings for the first time in his short life of six weeks. He was feeling lonely and could not understand where we were taking him. I remember singing him a stupid lullaby for the one hour journey home. We brought Sheru home sometime in October. In no time he forgot his parents and became one of us.
Sure we had problems making him understand commands and things he could and could not do. He use to shit and piss whenever he wanted and wherever he wanted. At one moment, we were not sure if we could take the responsibility of a dog. The earlier days were very frustrating.
Although it took some time, we did warm of Sheru being a part of the family. He use to tear paper, destroy things, chew his toys and make a big mess. Now after almost a year he has changed a lot. He still tears papers when given but then the frequency is very less. When he was small, he would like to put everything in his mouth. That time we had to put our hand in his mouth and remove the things from his mouth. Now he understand the meaning of “loose”.
When we come back from office, he is at the door wagging his tail wildly. I wonder if we tie a broom to his tail would he clean the room. But then he has to be happy to wag his tail so much. But then his idea of being happy is running around, everyone to play around him, other dogs to play and the best, Indian food which smells of Indian spices. We feed him before we eat and the only thing he does is watch us when we eat, his mouth clearly watering. So all he wants his to play and eat, a goal closer to my goal but then who allows that.
The way he sits besides you, the way he protects Sheena if we make a action of beating her, the way he greets you when you come from office and many such incidents make him all the more adorable.
He has grown a lot. He is quite multi-talented to say. He can understand English, Dutch, Hindi, Marathi and Punjabi because we all talk to him in all these language. I stay on the ground floor and only floor he can walk right into. He likes to sleep in my room but then he keeps on walking in the middle of the night. The best he likes is sitting next to me while I work on the laptop. So I sit with one leg on the bed and other on the floor. He comes and sleeps by my leg.
Before this I have never taken care of any animal nor I had any special love for them. I did not hate them or anything but never felt the love for them. But Sheru had become a part of my life even though I agree keeping a dog is a big responsibility. 19th August was Sheru’s birthday. He became one year old. Unfortunately the family is in India and I cannot give him that much time because of my job and he could get very lonely without people around him for the major part of the day.
However hopefully he would not be alone for his next birthday. I have brought a toy for him.
Just celebrating one year of a dog’s life

Sheru, 6 months old. He had become a little fat by then. The photo was taken when we made him sit there. He wanted to play all the time and just wouldn’t listen.
The Inquisitive Sheru. The photo was taken during the Milan trip. The trip was quite exhaustive for him. So the next time we had to keep him in a kennel
Smells good! Sheru exploring the woods in Germany
Sheru posing for the camera in Germany
Sheru always watches me when I go to my room at ground floor. He then waits till he is sure that I am not going out then he walks down the stairs to my room. He like to run outside and he knows when its time for a walk
Sheru sleeping on my lap in the car. He came with us to Milan, Italy.
The latest photo of Sheru. He opened the eyes slightly and the closed again. His sleep is more important than the photo session.
