After the tragic small accident I had this Friday, rumors are flying high in the office. The only person to be blamed mostly for the rumors would be ofcourse ME. Except the two colleagues who joined me for the movie and except the family members nobody knows the exact story. So on Monday when I entered the office with a chin injury and a black spot near the left eye, everyone was curious to know what really happened. I sit at the end of the room and there are almost 10 colleagues who I have to pass before I reach my desk.
The first person I met, was told that I was mugged. The mugger was a six feet tall person who kept a gleaming knife on my chin. That’s why the injury on the chin. Then when he did not find anything on me except the change in my pocket, he hit me and hence the spot near the left eye.
The second rumor I started was I drank a lot, got drunk to the extent of losing my balance and then hurt myself.
The third rumor I drank a lot, went in a bar and teased a girl. Her boyfriend got angry and we had a fight. It was good that our friends seperated us otherwise it would have been more bandages (For him).
So all the rumors are floating around with the third one becoming the most told one and also supported by my two colleagues. But the problem is that everybody thinks that I am hiding something and nobody believes anything I tell. The most obvious suspect is Sheru who they supected used his paws on my chin.
Sheru is a sweet dog who stops at my voice unless he really wants to play or sees another dog. He likes to bite but taking care that he does not bite too hard. Sheru would not even hurt a stranger.
When I tell them I teased a girl under the influence of alcohol they don’t believe me at all. Here how it went
They: What Happened?
Me: I drank a lot
Me: I teased a girl and her boyfriend trashed me.
They: Yeh baat kuch hajam nahi hui! (We can’t digest this)
Me: Kyon? (Why?)
They: Ladki ki chedne ki himmat nahi tum main! (You don’t have the guts to tease a girl.) aur tu peeta nahi! (and you don’t drink)
What? They underestimate me. People think I am too sharif (decent) to go and tease a girl. I can flirt with a girl I know but teasing is a different ball game altogether. So they don’t trust me with the news that I got hurt while teasing a girl. I should have told a more convincable lie or I need to really go and tease a girl.
Truth is a funny thing. I have seen rumors becoming truth and truth becoming rumors. So sticking to my side of the story had atleast one person convinced. He had his doubts but half-believed what I was saying.
‘Y” came to my desk today and told me to stop drinking. He told me how I was a decent boy and that drinking was a bad habit. He really gave me a earful. He also called me home where he wanted to talk about my ‘drinking’ problem. I told him that all the sadness and troubles and heartbreaks in my life has pushed me to drink. He scolded me for not keeping my senses and also advised me to go to India where for some strange reason; he thinks I will stop drinking. I told him I could not come to his house because I start drinking early in the evening. He started again that I have changed since the last year.
At home, Vijay jokingly asked me how many glasses of alcohol I had before I fell? Ranjana jokingly asked me with whom I fought? Funny! Nobody seems to believe my truth or my lies.
Which comes to a simple question; what is truth? The one I tell you or the one you like to believe?
