Jolanda (pronounced as Yolanda) is my dutch colleague. She is somewhere in early thirties. She is short by Dutch standard, somewhere about 5 Feet and she is pregnant.
Two days back Jolanda gave us sweets and cakes and muffins and announced her pregnancy. Her idea is instead of telling everybody one-by-one why not announced it a once. A kind of sharing the happiness with everybody at once. Some of us felt that it was unusual. Not because she was pregnant, but because she announced it. We don’t mind her announcing but it was a little unusual. We are used to see woman getting pregnant and see the visible difference that their body undergoes. Everybody knows it but nobody asks about it. I don’t know about woman asking another woman but it must be a girl thing.
It was crazy, sudden and most of us were not sure what reaction to give. Most of us just went with a smile and big “ohhhhhhhhhh” Later that day we talked to her about it and she said “What do you expect from me?” and she was right, what did we expect?
Yolanda is kind of a little crazy with a good sense of humor, English which is close to normal English because of her studies in UK and a British boyfriend and a contagious laughter. I had known her more than a year now.
We love to insult each other. Insulting, not in the sense of insulting but in a funny way. We make a lot of fun of each other. Like the other day, she came to my table and asked
She: Hey, what is this funny bird on your table?
Me: That’s a kiwi. Ben (my friend from New Zealand) gave it to me.
She: Its fur looks great. Oh wait, did you cut your hairs? I thought I saw those furs somewhere?
The Kiwi, Ben gave me when he came from New Zealand. My hairs does not look like that!
I had to get back at her.So the next day it was my turn
Me: Hey! Did you say “Hi” to us at the railway station yesterday?
She: Yes! I was in a hurry so did not wait much
Me: Right! First we were so happy that a girl actually said Hi to us. But then we realized it was just you.
We have a good laugh on our own jokes. Once she laughed on a joke for almost 15 minutes. She had to go out of the office just to stop laughing. She is crazy, she is hilarious and she is a good person. Yes! she is nice person to be around with.
So this funny lady who still has a child somewhere in her is going to give birth to her own child. I just could not stop commenting on that
Me: So, you are going to have a baby
She smiles and says: Yes! I am
Me: So what does this mean? That you are actually going to grow up now and be a mature lady or something
She: What for?
Me: Yes! You re right! What for?
She: Are you going to grow up anyday?
Me: What for?
I know she is going to make a wonderful mother. Wishing her all the luck and happiness. I hope she stays the same. To quote her own words
“A baby is going to have a baby. Its just, I will be a big baby”
