“Big Fish” is about lies, tall tale and fantasy and still its about the way you live your life. When the movie ends, you don’t know what to believe in and what to not. Tim Burton directs this fantasy about a dying man and his son. Tim Burton gave the wonderful Edward Scissorhands earlier.“Big Fish” is about Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman, played by Ewan McGregor in the younger version and Albert Finney as an older version.
Edward is known for the big stories he weaves, he can tell a story and could captivate the audience. His story contains witches, big fish, mermaids, giants, a secret town and everything Edward can think about. But all through these stories, his son, William played by Billy Crudup never understands him. For him he is a big mystery. The story starts when William gets a call from hiss mother that his father s dying. He returns back after many years to talk to him and to understand what he really is, what is the real Edward Bloom behind all those legendry stories. The rest of the movie is how William understands his father and does he know the fact he came to search for. The movie is told from Edward’s side and the people knew. The stories he tells is about the people he actually meets during his work as a salesman but the way he adds glamour and suspense and fantasy makes the people all the more interesting and the stories a pleasure to listen.
The end may leave a lot to be desired with most of the questions being unanswered. Are the people who you see at the end of the movie really the people as described by Edward? But you are not there to seek answers. You see the movie and gradually start believing the stories. It’s a fantasy as Edward says to his son
‘I’ve never been anybody but me from the day I was born. If you don’t know who I am, that’s your failing, not mine.’
The movie does not attempt to answer the questions of William and it is not any mystery too. Its just looks back at a journey of a man who likes to tell stories and build a make-believe world around himself which he can manipulate the way he likes.
Tim Burton succeeds in telling an engrossing and entertaining story. I was very reluctant to rent this movie because the synopsis were not that encouraging. But as the site says, it’s a modern “Wizard of Oz”, I think it comes close.
Ewan McGregor plays the role of a young Edward quite effectively. A man with dreams in his eyes. Albert Finney plays the older Edward with much ease as an old man who still lives in his world of dreams.
The rest of the case including Danny DeVito and Jessica Lange. A good watch if you are ready to not to use the brain much and just enjoy the fantasies that unfold before you.
