It snowed. And it snowed. For two days it was snowing heavily in Amsterdam. In fact it was snowing in all of Netherlands. For 2 days it snowed continuously. It snowed so much that it had never snowed that much in the last 50 years. Fifty years might be an overstatement. But I have asked many Dutch and they all say the same that they have never seen so much snow in Netherlands before.
Every time it had snowed, I have seen that it snows only for four to five hours and then after some time all the snow melts out. No Not this time. It had snowed for 2 days. I come from Mumbai, where nothing except the refrigerator goes down below 10 degree, not even the AC. The whole city is covered in snow. You can see white snow everywhere. There was no other colour except white. And you walk through inches and inches of snow making big footsteps as you move.
The snow brings out the child in us. Yesterday after lunch when we went on the road to see the snow, it wasn’t long before everybody of us were throwing snow at each other. It was not only us but a lot of people from office were enjoying themselves. Sheena, Vijay’s 8-year daughter made snowman in our backyard with two badminton bats as hands. We even had a snowman near our office building
The ground was covered with 6 inches of snow. I am here in Amsterdam on this historical occasion. I guess history is always created when I am involved. Even after 24 hours, the snow is not melting. It has started into turning ice and now becoming slippery. Today coming back from the super store, I slipped and fell heavily on my ass right in the middle of the road. A sweet beautiful girl standing near by looked at me in horror when my heavy body almost made a dent on the road. I think the earth shook when I fell. I gave up my last chance to make any impression on the girl plus my ass hurts badly. Not that I had any chance with the girl. But you never know, do you?
The other problem was the cars getting stuck in snow. Yesterday night Vijay’s (In whose house I stay) car got stuck in snow. It’s not easy to push a car in snow on a freezing night. Today morning I got a request to help one of our neighbors. Her car wheels just turned without moving in any direction possible. Vijay and me helped her. It was difficult. The car hardly moved. After moving back and forth, the car was parked nicely in front of her house. I waited to see if she takes to the road. She got out, thanked us and went in. It then dawned to me that she was actually not going anywhere but was parking her car and I was trying to push her on the road and Vijay was pushing her away from the road. I guess that’s why it was difficult to move the car.
Aman’s brother in US had subscribed to an online movie site for three days. Aman wanted to see all the new movies on the site. He wanted to update his “database”. He prayed and prayed when it snowed. “Please god let tomorrow be a holiday”. I remember my childhood days when I use to pray like that. Evening when Aman, Pranav and me were playing in the snow, throwing snow at each other, I joined Aman in the prayer. It was snowing so heavily, that we both thought it would be a holiday. We were already slipping in the holiday mood. After four hour, God changed his mind. It stopped snowing. Inspite of prediction and all the prayers, it stopped snowing. I mean sometime someone up there has to listen. I mean I am happy for whatever he has given me but sometimes I guess he could answer some prayers like this too.
When it rains heavily in Mumbai and snows heavily in Amsterdam, I would have liked to eat nice cutting chai, eat pakodas and watch a nice movie. Not every dream is fulfilled everyday. Aman cannot eat pakodas. He is allergic to nuts and everything related to nuts. Today accidentally he eat some gram flour. In 10 Minutes, he found it difficult to breath, could not speak and his face began to swell. He calls this Dracula phase when his whole face looks like a swollen potato. He says he has Allergic urticaria. He becomes normal after an hour or so. But this one hour becomes unbearable for him. I have seen him in such a condition for the first time. He had described it a number of times. But I never could have guessed that it was this bad. The net says there is no cure for Allergic urticaria. You just have to avoid whatever triggers it.
Its March and its appraisal time. The less the said of appraisal the better. Its that time of the year when you have to answer questions like “How do you align yourself to the company goals with respect to the current profile and project and How do you plan to implement CCP, AMSSJ, and GHSLS in your current profile?” What’s that? I am still trying to understand what my job profile is and they are asking me to explain somthing which I am hearing for the first time. I am not even aware of the abbreviation they use in the questions. My goals for next year has to be to learn about all the abbreviations.
A remarkable objective and a fantastic goal. I may get a fantastic rating of 5 next year. I have my fingers crossed.
