Just a week left before I go back to India. This time next week, I will be in India, Mumbai. It has been three months in Amsterdam. Never knew three months can be such a long time. The last few weeks it has been busy. Even the weekends have been busy. I will be in India for a very short break and then come back.
But it seems like yesterday. Three months before when I came here I was grappling with the Dutch railways names. I was trying to eat Dutch food. I was trying to avoid all the beef, pork dishes my mom said never to eat. I was struggling with the moody Amsterdam weather. It was and is so cold here. Its less than 20 degrees and they call it summer. I was surprised to find no one on the streets on Sundays. The only action was at the Centraal Station. I was surprised that the day were so big and nights so small. Of course you have always read that in geography. But for a person like me who has lived all his life in Mumbai, it gets on your nerves when you get up at daylight and still find its 4:00 AM.
Its not at all bad. Just Different. I was happy to see the beautiful city. I was happy to see the canals. I was happy to ride the wonderful canal ferry trips. I was happy to see the museums, the palaces, beautiful buildings. It took me time but I adjusted to the different lifestyle here. The way of living was totally different from my hectic schedules in Mumbai. Earlier I never thought of enjoying my Sundays. Sundays were for that blissful sleeps which I missed the whole week. Sometimes it would be the morning shift alone in the office. But here it was compulsory holiday. So instead of sleeping and wasting the whole weekend, it was just roaming around in the city. Every time you see Amsterdam, it always seems new to you. The buildings, the people, the weather. It never fails to amaze you with the variety. Amsterdam is a small city to accomdate such a vast resource of culture and beauty. Its definitely a case of good things in life coming in small package.
