I don’t have a fear of Snakes but I will think twice before touching them. Imagine putting 450 snakes on a plane. Samuel Jackson stars in a snake movie called “Snakes on a Plane” and as the name suggest, it is just that many, many snakes on a plane.
The movie is an action beast film like Anaconda and is targeted to give you thrills for almost two hours and for those two hours it almost succeeds.
The story is simple. A surfer on a vacation in Hawaii, Sean Jones played by Nathan Philips sees a murder being committed by a mafia boss. After an unsuccessful attempt on his life, Sean joins hands with Neville Flynn played by Samuel L Jackson, a FBI agent and take off to LA to testify against the mafia boss. The mafia boss in an attempt to kill him plants 450 snakes in the cargo. He sprays some chemical over them to aggravate them. The snakes are to be released by a time mechanism.
As expected the snakes are released and they make their way through the cargo and AC into the passenger area. People start getting killed. Among the passengers are a Rap group, a mother with a baby, a kick boxer, a rich woman with a small dog (striking resemblance to Paris Hilton), two small boys who are flying alone, a aged air hostess, two young air hostess, one of whom is taking her last flight (Why one of the character always has the last job in such movies). These are some of the characters which survive. Other as expected die a gruesome death. How the passengers fight against these snakes and land the plane when both the pilots are dead forms the rest of the story.
All are expected characters with an unlikely hero somewhere. Many obnoxious people realizing their behavior was wrong and then fighting together with other passenger. SoaP is not a typical big budget monster movie. Its a small disaster monster movie and does not aspire to be one. Its supposed to give on the edge entertainment with some cheap thrills with snake attaching in vengeance and all the snakes with their big teeth and all and snakes coming from all quarter to make you feel gross and everything. The snakes biting everybody and those dying turning blue and snakes biting the private part of people. The movie does all that.
The snakes are mostly animation with fierce looking faces for effect and the special effects are good. There are snakes with various sizes and shape including a big Anaconda which is shown swallowing a big fat man. Don’t ask me, I closed my eyes. I did not want to pass out again.
Except Samuel L Jackson, no other actors are known to me. Actually actors are not that important as most of them die before you even remember them. But the thrill is there. If you are expecting a quality movie maybe like even “Godzilla”, this is not a movie for you. But if you enjoyed the “Tremors” series, then yes you could watch this. Its fun. Never a boring moment.

At the climax when Samuel L Jackson is tired of the snakes and goes almost on a suicide plan he shouts
Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!
You actually find yourself rooting for him. If you enjoyed those Hollywood B-grade action flicks where the hero kills all the villains with his big machine guns and everything, you will enjoy SoaP. If you looking at direction like this one is directed by David R Ellis who directed “Cellular” and script you can throw the logic out of window. Its entertainment and you enjoy it. Only thing is you end up watching the commode and small holes from where snakes can come out. Doesn’t cost to be careful, does it?
Rating: I would give a 7/10 even though low on quality but high on entertainment. People would not agree but who cares. I enjoyed it.

Eeew! That brought me memories from a coach trip. The driver played a disgusting film (can’t remember the title and I don’t wish to either) in which a man was made swallow a snake (I can’t remember what kind of snake but it was a dangerous one!). It was so revolting! Even if I didn’t look I could hear it. I had such a horrible time!
Holy Moly!!!
I will never watch this movie…
