Apart from enriching our childhoods with inspiring regional stories and tales like Panchtantra, Tenalirama, Mulla Naseeruddin, etc
Doordarshan also opened a new world of diverse cultures and lifes for us at the times when foreign was actually unknown to most of us.

Remember "Di Di's Comedy Shows" and "Telematches" from Transtel Cologne Germany?
"Different Strokes" from US?
"Oshin" from Japan?
"Fairy Tale Theatre" from Britain?
"Cosmos" from Soviet Union, i presume?

Remember Agatha Christie's Poirot?
Star Trek?

Although the past always appears to be more perfect than the present, but for most of us, born in early 80s era of controlled access to infotainment, doordarshan did everything it could, to keep us close to our televisions , and to our moral ethics and our roots. which todays tv channels with all their money, TRPs and glamour, can never achieve.

we were lucky to have experienced the golden age of indian television. thanks doordarshan for making our childhood so memorable..

I think one serial is missing - GUNIRAAM (starring Rakesh Bedi)

It had a title song something like...guniraam bhaai guniraam...

Then there was one more cop based serial - PC 1008 or something like this.

This website has seen a nice compilation of old DD serials. Personally, I think one shouldn't be adding serials from cable television era to this golden list. Old DD serials may look less glamorous compared to today's tv programs, but the fact is that they were all focused on quality of content and had something rich and concrete about them. You got to see a lot of talented and good directors, story writers and actors attached with television towards the late 80s and early 90s.

Sadly today's tv programs are a real crap.

There was a serial named Fatichar. Again featuring Pankaj Kapoor. It was a comedy in which fatichar was a character from a writer's imagination. This character ran away from the fiction that this writer was writing, and then started living his real life. An awesome comedy.

There was some X-Zone serial based on ghost stories. Sometimes they would put a banner saying it was based on true events. It was a truly horrifying serial. Guess it was on Zee.

One of my "unfortunately" most watched serial was the monday 9pm show on DD. It had Sudesh Bedi playing the role of a cop. He would see "suraag"s anywhere.
