Woh Bhuli Dastaan - 7
February 2, 2006 by full2faltu
The Seventh in the series of Bhoole Bisare Serials. Still more to come.
Potli Baba Ki
I think it had Kamini Kaushal in the afternoon slot telling stories. A lot of puppets and moral-laden stories for kids
Bharat Ek Khoj
Based on Jawharlal Nehru’s book, Discovery of India. Directed by Shyam Benegal, Roshan Shet played Jawaharlal Nehru. Good. Sometimes heavy, it traced India history from ancient time. It had the song “Shrishti se pehle satya nahin tha, Asatya bhin nahin, Antariksh bhi nahin tha, Pataal bhi nahin…Chupa tha gyan kahan, kisi pata tha…”
Dekh bhai Dekh
Anand Mahendru’s fantastic serial. A bit of slapstick but wholesome entertainment. Shekar Suman, Farida Jalal, Naveen Nischal, and many more. Liliput was a added attraction. Remember the line by Liliput “Dekh bhai dekh Sameer bhai”
Idhar Udhar.
A very old serial by Anand Mahendru again. Had Supriya pathak and Ratna Pathak and also Dina pathak. Light hearted comedy.
Dane Annar Ke
Serial directed by Gulzar. I can’t seem to remember the serial story though.
Kab Tak pukaroon
I remember the serial because it had Pankaj Kapoor in it and his daughter was played by a girl from our locality. Those days a star close to our house was a story in itself. It was serious stuff. Watched a few episodes and then it went over my head.
Batmya, Samachar and News
Those were the days when the source of news was the DD channel. Batmaya (For Mumbai Doordarshan) in marathi at 7:00 PM, Samachar at 8:30 PM, one prime serial in between and then News at 9:30. Later they changed the News time to 10:00. Controlled by government, it showed only those news which the government wanted us to see. The news was nothing but had some government minister inaugurating something or some minister said something. I never remembered any breaking news. Except when Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi died. That’s when everything stopped and we had 12 days of endless music programs. The most frustrating was during a cricket match when a live telecast of the match was stopped for guess what, the news of course. And they showed who won on the news. Imagine the last three overs of the match and what do you have, the news. By the time they returned, everything was over. Maybe a sicko sat at DD.
The World this week
Pranoy Roy debuts on national television. The tabla theme music every Friday night was first heard in this half hour news capsule and news was never the same again. The NDTV logo gave a total new meaning to the word “NEWS”. This was long before NDTV associated with Star News channel. This was long before news became a 24 hours affair. This was the time when news was everything the government wanted us to see and not what was actually happening. NDTV’s current affair programs were the best analysis we could get. The same expertise was seen during the Election and budget coverage. The best part of TWTW was the last 5 minutes or so where they showed some interesting hatke news.
Surabhi
Siddharta Kak and the beautiful Renuka Shahane. The real meaning of Colgate smile is seen here. The program shoped the tradition and culture of India. It showed India like it was never seen before. Renuka Shahane was later replaced by Iravati Harshe, who also did a good job. I think it was the longest running cultural magazine on television.
Weekend Movies.
The weekends were fixed for movies. The road wore a deserted look during primetime movie. A rather adult movie on late Friday, A regional movie on Saturday evenings and A hindi blockbuster on Sunday evening. There was also the Sunday afternoon slot, which showed movies in all Indian languages. Most of these were award-winning movies with English subtitles. Even though I understood little at that time and could not appreciate those movies, I use to watch them because if I slept in the afternoon, sleep wouldn’ come easy.
Gubbare
A serial about short comedy stories on DD’s rival channel, Zee. I know it doesn’t qualifies as old serial. But there were nice stories and funny too. I remember one story in which marathi actor Dilip Prabhalvarkar plays a clerk who is asked to replace the boss on a business trip. The boss had asked the services of a escort service girl played by Niki Aneja. A lovely story about a aging man with a very stagnant marriage and a girl who was always used by men.
Shreeman Shreemati
Rakesh Bedi, Reema Lagoo and Jatin kanakia with Archana puran Singh. A story about a married man who has a film actress as a neighbour. Mostly slapstick. Funny. Remember “Dilbura uncle”
Zee Horror show.
On the Zee TV again. From the Ramsay’s stable. The serial was more of a comedy than a horror show. Ghosts with funny makeup like some syrup smeared on the face and eyes goggling out. In every story when the ghost came, there used to be lightening and heavy winds. I can understand that there is lightening some times. But every time? All the ghost walk in slow motion pattern making different noises and would catch the victim even though they ran fast. The best comedy serial of those days. The title was just to attract viewers.
Aahat
The horror show by B P Singh on Sony. A class apart from regular Ramsay ghost stories. The earlier episode did not deal with ghost. It dealt with thriller kind of stories. The later episodes dealt with ghosts and spooky things. Each story was of two episodes. Some were nicely made. All in all a must watch for horror loving viewers.

There was some X-Zone serial based on ghost stories. Sometimes they would put a banner saying it was based on true events. It was a truly horrifying serial. Guess it was on Zee.
One of my “unfortunately” most watched serial was the monday 9pm show on DD. It had Sudesh Bedi playing the role of a cop. He would see “suraag”s anywhere.
Punds you have been tagged to write 8 oh well get the details from my blog

Hey!
I just went through ur series.. U have amazingly covered almost all the serials aired on DD.. But u missed out one serial which i used to desperately wait for every week.. a desi take of Mills n boon.. a nawab (Kanwaljeet Singh) and a girl(Dipika Deshpande) who comes to work at his palace..
Then there was ‘Fir Wahi Talash’ with Alok Nath and Moushmi Chaterjee.. I guess that’s covered by u
Great Blog!
There was a serial named Fatichar. Again featuring Pankaj Kapoor. It was a comedy in which fatichar was a character from a writer’s imagination. This character ran away from the fiction that this writer was writing, and then started living his real life. An awesome comedy.
Hi !
I like to watch serials IDHAR UDHAR & DEKH BHAI DEKH . These two r the best serials i have ever seen. I would like 2 watch it again & again.I don’t know wheater u get my msg or not but still i want to tell u my thoughts abut this.I have seen dekh bhai dekh more than ten or twelve times . Because I also like to watch repeat telecast of the episodes.
Please covey my msg to Ratna Pathak & Supriya Pathak that i them very very much.I like to watch there serials and movies . i don’t like to watch tv & movies very much but whenever i come to know any one them is the part of any serial , i must watch that serial.
I think one serial is missing - GUNIRAAM (starring Rakesh Bedi)
It had a title song something like…guniraam bhaai guniraam…
Then there was one more cop based serial - PC 1008 or something like this.
This website has seen a nice compilation of old DD serials. Personally, I think one shouldn’t be adding serials from cable television era to this golden list. Old DD serials may look less glamorous compared to today’s tv programs, but the fact is that they were all focused on quality of content and had something rich and concrete about them. You got to see a lot of talented and good directors, story writers and actors attached with television towards the late 80s and early 90s.
Sadly today’s tv programs are a real crap.
Its great many people liked those old serials does anyone knows where one can downlaod them as some of the guyz use to record them on their VCR those days
it will be nice to relive that time with old videos
not a single Friday passed by, where I failed to watch Shriman Shrimati and “All the best”. Those were the days.
Tehkikaat, Raja aur Rancho…..those were memorable……wud stay in our minds forever.
