Weekend came and weekend gone. Not a bad weekend. Roamed around in Amsterdam for 2 days. Filled up the refrigerator. I have stayed here for more than a month now. Its point of time when you stop being a tourist and something between local and tourist. Its the time when you explore more than the designated tourist spots.
Saw a wonderful movie on TV this weekend. It was a 1976 movie, “Same time Next year”. Just 2 characters and the story revolved among these two people. Two unrelated people, Sam and Doris meet in a hotel far away from thier homes and end up in bed with each other. Embarassed and guilty as they both are happily married, they try to come over the guilt. They talk to each other, and find out they like each other. They agree to meet each other the next year Same day and spend 24 hours with each other.
The story takes through the journey of these two individual through the next 26 years. It goes through the love, the passion they have for each other. Mind you, they are not having an affair. They just meet once every year. When the movie ends, its already 26 years and just 26 days of thier life. They talk about each other, thier family, thier children and everything that matters and everything that does not matter. Everything is shown through thier conversation. You have to imagine how their family would be. Because that is what they do too. They never meet each other’s family. They share everything and still remain faithful to thier spouses.
The scene where Sam helps Doris deliver a child. Its the time when Sam is going through mid-life crisis and fails to satisfy his wife but gets passionate when he just touches Doris. The guilt on his face when he thinks that his passion has resulted into premature delivery of Doris’s baby.
The scene where Sam becomes indifferent to everything and his political perspective changes and Doris is angry at him. Some really good scenes. No where the film looks like its dragging. A good example that you can have two characters tell an interesting story.
The great part is the director has not given an end which you can call good or sad or bad ending. The story continues where the two promise to meet. Its not a tragedy nor a happy ending. Its kind of ending where life goes on. Its a love story about two people who were deeply in love after living 26 days of thier life together and living 26 years of thier hearts together.
